  1. Matthew 21:40-46
Jesus continued, “When the owner of the vineyard returns,” Jesus asked, “what do you think he will do to those farmers?”

The religious leaders replied, “He will put the wicked men to a horrible death and lease the vineyard to others who will give him his share of the crop after each harvest.”

Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures?

‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has now become the cornerstone.
    This is the Lord’s doing,
and it is wonderful to see.’

I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation that will produce the proper fruit. Anyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on.”

When the leading priests and Pharisees heard this parable, they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet.

I used to struggle with the statement "fear the Lord" because it made God seem much less personal and accepting. But this conversation here shows the importance of fearing the Lord. The Pharisees should have been scared to death once they realized what Jesus was saying. He made the Pharisees say that the ones who are going to take the Son of God away and kill him will be harshly punished by God. But since they fear their loss of power more than God, they immediately looked for ways to arrest him and kill him, rather than repent and beg God for mercy.

Fear of the Lord is basically understanding God's massive rule and authority over creation. It's understanding our place and knowing that He could eliminate this whole planet with a word. But He chooses to be patient and gentle, even though He has all the right to be harsh. If the Pharisees got this, they would have started re-thinking their positions. It is much easier to be guided by God if we are humble and it is much easier to be humble if we acknowledge the authority of God over our existence.

Praise God that he is patient and gentle with us right now!!!
