One of Jesus’ titles is the prince of Peace. In fact, he promises that the peace he gives to his followers is a peace that passes all understanding. Yet here in Matthew He talks about that conflict that inevitably comes into a person’s life who chooses to follow him. Why is this? I remember when I was a new Christian and the joy and peace that was so strong and so evident that at times it seemed like it would overwhelm me. I was filled with the Holy Spirit and it was wonderful. At the same time I began to talk to others about my faith and tell people about what Jesus did for me, I found people responded to it differently. Some responded well. A few wanted the same thing. But some were openly antagonistic to me… even threatening. Needles s to say, I didn’t enjoy the last kind of interactions. But as a follower of Jesus I couldn’t help it…I had become salt and light, but more than that as the Apostle Paul tells us in first Corinthians, to those who were being saved I had become a “sweet smell” but to those who were perishing the “smell of death.” Their response to me living out my faith in front of them was mostly effected by where they were in their life at the time. This is partly why Jesus said to us, “in this world you will have trouble, but take heart, for I have overcome the world.” So the next time you have conflict because of your faith and you feel like you didn’t do anything to deserve it remember these verses, and if you never have any conflict with someone, ever, regarding your faith in Jesus, well then, you better check your odor.
ReplyDeleteNow wherever we go He (God) uses us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Good News like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a fragrance presented by Christ to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those being saved and by those perishing. To those who are perishing we are a fearful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved we are a life-giving perfume. 1 Corinthians 2: 15 – 16
The story of the relationship between Jacob, Esau, Laban, Rachel, and Leah would make a great movie. I remember reading it all when I first became a Christian and getting sucked into the story because it had so much intensity and drama. Somebody needs to pitch this to Mel Gibson! =)
