In Genesis 22, God tests Abraham by asking him to take his only son Isaac up on a mountain and sacrifice him. This is CRAZY! It's such a weird story that it is easy to detach from what was really going on and look at it as a fairytale. Isaac carried the wood and the knife on his back and then let his Dad tie him down and pull a knife out and start to kill him. It's crazy! I have heard that some scholars believe that this mountain was the same hill that Jesus was crucified on. When I read this story, it is amazing how much of the imagery reflects Jesus sacrifice and death. For a traditional Jew, this story has to somehow make them wonder why God would do this to Abraham.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that hits me is that Abraham was kind of screwed up. Twice he went and told people that his wife was his sister and watched her be taken away to the leader so that he could have sex with her. That's pretty messed up. But here, God tells him to kill his only son and he actually attempts to do it.
If God asked me to kill one of my daughters, I can tell you right now that I wouldn't do it. I couldn't do it. I would rather die first. I couldn't handle it. But I have to remember that God has asked me to do things that seemed crazy at the time and then when everything looked like it was totally hopeless, he provided a way out. Every time!
So I really love verses 13 - 14.
Genesis 22:13-14
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."
On the mountain of the Lord, it will be provided! This makes me feel so safe. God WILL provide... no matter what. I know this now. It's written all throughout the story of my life and many of my Christian friends. The real question I have is "when" will He provide? I always struggle with that one.
