Matthew 12:38-45
ReplyDeleteThen some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you."
He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one[b] greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."
This last section gives me the creeps. The Pharisees are asking Jesus to perform for them to prove his worth and He responds by giving examples of old testament stories where other people repented and turned around. But he says that they will not repent through faith, so they are going to get beat down by evil.
The thing that freaks me out is that I can see this in my life before I knew Jesus. When I was on drugs, I would get sick of being so screwed up all the time, so I would try my hardest to sober up and get clean. But every time I did that I would end up falling back into it. The weird thing is that when I would fall back into it I would need to do 3 times more drugs than normal to make up for the amount of time that I was trying to be clean. My addiction would go crazy while I was repressing it.
I am sure that anyone with an addiction or stronghold has felt this. Managing sin without being healed and walking in step with Jesus doesn't work. Deep down inside there is a spirit starving for the sin that is just waiting for its host to give in. When they do give in that spirit of addiction explodes.
A good example of this might be the Catholic priests who end up raping young boys. I don't think many of them signed up to be a priest so that they could have sex with kids. But when they are trying to repress their sexual desires in order to be "more holy" it turns into dark lust that grows and grows over time. If it remains hidden, it evolves into something much worse and eventually is taken out on innocent boys.
Thank God for Jesus and the freedom He gives us to offer our hearts to Him so that he can drive out the darkness that wants to own us and kill us. My heart just wants to worship when I think about the way he has cleaned me up. It's amazing. I am forever grateful and I will never stop talking about it!!!
