Reading the gospel of Matthew sometimes excites me and scares me a little at the same time. Now I realize that I’m not an apostle but when you read that one of the early on activities that Jesus does is call his apostles and give them authority to go out and “heal every kind of disease and illness,” telling them to cast out devils, raise the dead, cure leprosy…it makes me wonder how far off I am from the early followers of Jesus. And what strikes me is the call of Jesus to touch this fallen world with his power and authority and it always (or at least it’s supposed to) have an immediate effect on everyone around. King Jesus is here, his kingdom has come and here are the immediate benefits. Wholeness and healing, life and the power over death…Wow.

I will now arise," says the LORD.
"I will protect them from those who malign them."
This promise from the Psalms passage comforts me when I feel bombarded by negative thoughts.
"The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men."
ReplyDeleteI thought this was only happening now! I guess men have always been like they are today. We have to take heart that those who follow God have always struggled against evil as much as we do today - and frequently won!
I was watching a game show on TV, and when it was announced that one of the female contestants had been a playboy bunny (in her youth) the audience cheered - loudly! WHAT? But this is not new. Same stuff as when the Psalms were written.
Matthew 10:19-20
ReplyDeleteWhen you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
These verses are so comforting. When I talk to people about Jesus, church, Christianity, religion, and faith, I always feel like I am going to screw things up. But I know when I read this verse that it is not up to me. I remember the first time I sat down to teach a group of teenagers. I was scared to death. There were about 20 students in front of me and I had never dealt with a group like this. I put all the chairs in a circle and we sat down and looked at each other. My stomach was in knots and I was trembling. As soon as I started to speak, my voice changed and became very strong and deep. I sat up and started with the message that I had prepared and God changed me in that moment. My confidence soared. I'll never forget it. The kids were captivated and started asking all kinds of questions. We could have went for hours that day. It is so amazing when God steps in and speaks through people. It feels wonderful!
