  1. I remember when I first gave my life to Jesus at the age of 24. It's interesting because there was no church involvement that brought me to him... I did grow up in church, so I knew a little about God (enough to make me run from Him), but my view of Him was completely wrong and I am still trying to break off some of the things that I was taught about him as a kid... but that's another story.

Anyways, I remember when I first started reading the Bible, I started in Matthew. When I got to the Sermon on the Mount, I got scared because it seemed so legalistic too me and I knew I could never reach the level of self-control that Jesus speaks of here. Honestly, I just acted like I never read it because it really screwed with my head. I was filtering it all through who I perceived God to be at that time.

Now when I read it, it is easily one of my favorite sections in the Bible. I love studying it. I think these two verses speak very heavily about who Jesus is:

    Matthew 5
17 Jesus said, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
20 Unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!"

I used to think that my relationship with God was based upon my ability to manage my sin. It's a miracle that I ever decided to follow Jesus with this kind of mentality. I think most people's greatest fear in giving their lives over to God is that they will have to accept a huge pile of rules that are meant to control them, but Jesus says, "I've already done that for you. Just come to me as you are and I will give you a new heart and the things that you should do will come more naturally as I change you. You will still screw up... but I will not hold against you ever again. I promise. I'll manage your sin for you. Just give me your heart and you'll be free."

I wish the world saw God like this right now!
