  1. This passage in Genesis is really all about trust. Can I trust God with my life, with my future, with my dreams? Here Sarah struggles with trusting God with her desire to have children and give Abraham an heir. It also shows the futility and the long term bad repercussions of stepping out ahead of God and trying to go it alone. From hagar came Ishmael and the descendants of Ishmael to this day are still fulfilling the angel's prophecy, even right now in places like Gaza.

  3. Matthew 6:22-23
Jesus said, “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!"

I have read the Sermon on the Mount so many times and I always seem to find something new every time. The verse above really stood out to me because I notice this with my kids. When they lie, I can see it in their eyes. People who use polygraphs to test if someone is lying are still trained to watch their eye movements and voice patterns to tell if they are lying or not. When I see a lineup of mug shots on TV, their eyes usually look evil to some extent. You can tell when someone is angry by looking at their eyes.

Jesus is saying that you can tell what is going on internally with someone by looking at their eyes... but I don't think that is the main point of this passage. I think the last verse is the main part.

"And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!"

This is such a strong verse. He is basically saying that when someone is in denial of their heart being dark, and they are convincing themselves that they are ok, that is EXTREME darkness. I'm sure the Pharisees hated this verse!

    Really interesting...
